What is the temperature at Uhuru Peak like?
With strong winds and chilly weather at the summit, the temperature at Uhuru Peak is constantly below freezing point, ranging between -4°C (25°F) at midday to-27°C (-17°F) in the early morning and at night.
Since climbers do not take a lot of time at the summit, they are very likely to experience these cold temperatures because even with the sunrise, it is not enough to heat the surroundings in such a short time..
What is the meaning of the name Uhuru?
Before Tanganyika, now Tanzania, gained independence, Uhuru Peak used to be called Kaiser Wilhelm Peak, a name chosen by Hans Meyer when he reached the summit in 1889. It was later renamed to Uhuru Peak to signify independence from the colonisers. Uhuru is a Swahili name that means freedom. That is why, in 1964, to commemorate the birth of the United Republic of Tanzania, this name was a perfect fit for this peak on the highest mountain in Africa.
