Uhuru Peak

Uhuru Peak is the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest point that stands at 5,985m perched on top of the Kibo Crater Rim. So basically, Uhuru Peak is a summit point on one of Kilimanjaro’s three peaks. These three peaks are Shira, the third highest, Mawenzi, the second highest and Kibo, the highest. It is at Kibo where Uhuru Peak is located. Climbers testify that this is the hardest part of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro after experiencing the summit push to Uhuru Peak, which begins shortly after midnight so that you can make it to the top by sunrise.

What Our Climbers Say

Discover experiences from our adventurous guests.

What is the temperature at Uhuru Peak like?

With strong winds and chilly weather at the summit, the temperature at Uhuru Peak is constantly below freezing point, ranging between -4°C (25°F) at midday to-27°C (-17°F) in the early morning and at night.
Since climbers do not take a lot of time at the summit, they are very likely to experience these cold temperatures because even with the sunrise, it is not enough to heat the surroundings in such a short time..

What is the meaning of the name Uhuru?

Before Tanganyika, now Tanzania, gained independence, Uhuru Peak used to be called Kaiser Wilhelm Peak, a name chosen by Hans Meyer when he reached the summit in 1889. It was later renamed to Uhuru Peak to signify independence from the colonisers. Uhuru is a Swahili name that means freedom. That is why, in 1964, to commemorate the birth of the United Republic of Tanzania, this name was a perfect fit for this peak on the highest mountain in Africa.
